This work, signed and dated, is one of the portrait medallions made by Woolner during his brief sojourn in Australia (1852-54). According to the State Library, it may have been the model for a bronze medallion produced in 1853-4.

NGV 1905 identifies the sitter (1790-1861) as “the Rev.James Clow, first Presbyterian minister in Melbourne, 1837.”
