The artist, of Huguenot descent, specialized in paintings of animals; he was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1881.
The four engravings donated together in 1876 reproduce popular 1870s paintings by Rivière, combining his facility at depicting animals with other Victorian themes. All four are signed by the painter and the print-makers involved.
