Reynolds, Samuel William (1773-1836; English) after Weigall, Henry (1829?-1925; English)
Portrait of the Duke of Wellington
Mezzotint
Gift of T.F.Bailey 1883
National Gallery of Victoria (p.184.1-1)

This image of the hero of Waterloo appears to have been based on a miniature produced in the year of his death in 1852, at the age of 83.

Reynolds, identified in the inscription at lower right, was a prolific printmaker who was appointed mezzotint engraver to King George III.

The pre-Felton collection also included several other images of the Duke: * Unknown (19C British?) Duke of Wellington {1897} Loc? [PA]*Stocks after Maclise Wellington and Blücher {1878} Loc? [PR]Unknown after Dawe Duke of Wellington 1842 {1875} NGV [PR]; and a plaster bust.

The present print was donated together with Gilbert (G.) [attrib.] Ballarat from Golden Point 1856 {1883} SLV [DR].
