Gift of George Collins Levey
National Gallery of Victoria (p.183.175-1)
= Levey gift, cat.no.175
This print, from a set reproducing a famous series of tapestries dating from 1670, depicts the diplomatic negotiations preceding Louis XIV’s marriage to the Spanish Infanta Maria Theresa (1638-83) in June 1660; see also Jeaurat after Le Brun Marriage of Louis XIV & Maria Theresa 1731 {1879} NGV [PR].
These events marked the end of years of hostility between France and Spain. Jeaurat was the son-in-law of Le Clerc, who had engraved scenes from the same tapestry series some 50 years earlier.
