The artist was a cartoonist and illustrator, known particularly for his work for Punch. He illustrated Lewis Carroll’s Sylvie and Bruno (1889), and many other books. His autobiography, Confessions of a Caricaturist, was published in 1901-2.

The NGV also holds several wood engravings after Furniss, purchased through the Felton Bequest in 1906.
