Holroyd, Charles (1861-1917; English)
The Grand Canal with the Salute (Venice) 1902
Etching, size unknown
Gift of the artist 1903
National Gallery of Victoria (129-2)
Relatively conventional views like this were apparently more amenable to Melbourne taste around the turn of the century than Whistler’s experimental 1880s etchings of Venice, only acquired for the NGV many years later.
Unfortunately this impression has darkened considerably with age.
