Caire, born in Guernsey, had already developed an interest in photography by the time he arrived in Australia with his parents in about 1860. He worked as a photographer in Adelaide and Clunes (Victoria), during the 1860s and 70s, and then took over Thomas Chuck‘s Melbourne studio in 1876.
The entries listed above note several significant photographs he took of works of art, including a famous series of Alfred Felton‘s rooms at the Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda.
