Jesus Christ espouse Ste Catherine [The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine] 1679
Engraving
Gift of George Collins Levey 1879
National Gallery of Victoria (p.183.11-1)
= Levey gift, cat.25
The source painting, in Cardinal Mazarin’s collection prior to its acquisition by Louis XIV, was transferred from the Louvre to Perpignan in 1957. It shows St Catherine of Alexandria united with Christ, a subject popular in the late medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Typically, as here, the infant Christ places a ring on St Catherine’s finger; see also Picart after Correggio Mystic Marriage of St Catherine {1879} NGV [PR] [Levey gift, cat.26].
For Turchi, also known as Alessandro Veronese (and hence sometimes confused with Paolo Veronese), see linked artist entry.
