Domenichino’s canvas, painted in about 1617-18, was acquired by Louis XIV in 1662, together with the Concert by Spada, formerly attributed to Domenichino. Both paintings, probably commissioned by Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi, apparently arrived in France in the 1650s.

Picart’s engravings after both works belonged to the the original group of Tableaux du Cabinet du Roi collected in 1677, and the two prints also formed part of Levey’s 1879 gift: see now Picart after Spada The Concert {1879} NGV [PR].
