Hume (1797-1873), born near Parramatta, showed an early taste for exploring. In 1824, he and William Hovell led an expedition to south-eastern Australia, reaching Corio Bay, and in 1828 he joined Sturt’s first trip into the interior; later, he became a successful pastoralist at Yass.
